You can take the city boy out of the city.....

Escaped the city for a quick 18 hours, and ran out to Dan's new lake pad for the night....
took young Dan for the short country experience.

He learned......
-how to avoid Amish buggies while driving the backroads...
-what the word "darned" means....
-how important it is to get beers for your Uncles QUICKLY!
-how to launch a Chinese Sky Lantern and not burn down his Uncle's house.....
-how many more stars there are in Indiana than in Illinois....
-that a neighbor's cat fighting with a wild animal at midnight, when you can't see crap 10 feet past the campfire, can be a scary thing.....
-that shorts don't cut it when the nighttime lows get down to the upper 40's.....
no matter how big your fire is.

Nice place on a quiet and clear lake in Northeastern, IN.....

Uncle Dan's Big Barn of Fun!.....comes with a bird clock....an awesome air hockey table...and maybe a skunk.
Dan "squared"......feeding spiders to the bass.

Dan and I learned........ that soybeans really don't taste that great raw!?

One flat, unlucky frog......but it did taste better than a raw soybean!

What started out as a horrid week.....
ended pleasantly by the end of Saturday....all things considered.

Today's Birthday (09/08/09)
Travel looks good this year, with minor complications. The hardest part is having to leave somebody you love. Instead of being sad, make it a celebration. Re-establish family roots. If you can't get the whole gang together at any of your homes, pick a campground or hotel somewhere in the middle.
___________________________

Funny how life works....
at Lunchtime.........
you've got the best Dad in the world,
emailing you stupid trivia contest answers across miles of cyberspace.....
and by Dinner he is gone.
Happy Birthday!?

Way too much irony to digest right now....
--Making sure he time-stamped his email (that's the "accountant" typing there)
--Yes..... the answer was Willie Nelson....and Willie was a "back up" only after I could not find a good Patsy Cline pic....
she was also born on September 8th.
--Checking out of this world on the same date you check in.....
(Only a .27% chance of that happening...... he would tell you if he could)
--Still having that devilish spirit to topple Tim in Trivia Tuesday.... egged on by Tim's good-natured ribbing at Dad's B-Day party this past Sunday....
--Best of all..... that fact that he couldn't (and wouldn't) collect on the Grand Prize....
would make him all the happier.
Those "7 days of Trivia Tuesday bragging rights" was all he needed.

Considering we almost lost him 4 months ago....and the fact that he was able to bounce back to almost 99% of the "old Joe" in the last couple of months....was an amazing feat and one that many families do not get....
and we are all greatly appreciative.

That last conversation....
that last hug and kiss.....
that last laugh....
to that last verse of "Happy Birthday" last Sunday.......
lucky for us, we were all able to collect our grand prize!
As tough as it is to let go now......I consider all of us the "winners" because those last few months were a HUGE gift from the Man upstairs.

So unless Joe has email access "up there".....this is his swan song....but knowing Joe.....he probably had all of this laid out on a spreadsheet somewhere.
(You bet your bippy!)

As our friend Jim Farrell said so eloquently late Tuesday night in an email.....
(after seeing the "Joe Cool" pic from Tuesday's blog....)

We have Weiner(s).....

Big dilemma here this week.....
is it Phillip or Philip?
We even asked a frazzled Alex Trebek....
and his judges could not come up with a solution.....
Sooooooooo for the first time in Tuesday Trivia history....
we have TWO GRAND PRIZE winners this week!!

Tim McNally and the team of Joe/Nancy will each take home the prize(s) this week.

This was an unprecedented week considering I had more correct answers than ever....unfortunately the first in wins. Although it had nothing to do with Apple Computers.....it had EVERYTHING to do with Apple Records of which George was a founder and Phil was the A/R director.

Obviously no one was fooled by a long-haired (digitally flipped) George Harrison and Phil Spector.

I will tune up my game next week and will prevail over you all!!

Phil Spector....
the man behind the Wall of Sound (and under the wigs!)

Wrote or co-wrote several great hits from the 50's/60's....

  • You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling (holds record for most US airplays)
  • (and) Then He Kissed Me
  • Baby I Love You
  • Be My Baby
  • Chapel of Love
  • Da Doo Run Run
  • Spanish Harlem
  • River Deep, Mountain High - Ike & Tina
  • (GREAT song...not so great dancing)

  • You Can Get Him, Frankenstein

(OK.....forget that last one...but not bad....it's on You Tube)

But his first # 1 hit in 1958 was for his teen group called the "Teddy Bears"....named after the Elvis song.....with Phil on guitar (minus wig)...and his fellow classmates at the time, singing.

To Know Him....Is To Love Him.

  • The title comes from his Dad's gravestone inscription...
the same Dad who shot himself when Phil was 9 years old......
    HELLO.....RED FLAG.......
    Warning Will Robinson!!!
  • The female singer, Carol Connors, went on to co-write "Hey Little Cobra" for the Ripchords and "Gonna Fly Now" which you may know as the Rocky Movie Theme song...also dated Elvis......and was all over Court TV during Phil's trial.......I think he shot the wrong chick.
  • Phil went to make a name for himself in producing records and worked with everyone from the Ronnettes to the Beatles to the Ramones.
  • Big wig-wearer to help cover all of his scars from an almost deadly car crash in the 70's.
  • I just purchased a bio about him off of Ebay...pretty wacky individual.
"Tearing Down the Wall of Sound" written by a guy who interviewed Spector a few weeks before he shot and killed his last date.
  • Currently serving 20 to life in a California State Penitentiary.
  • Liked his guns.

George Harrison......
(with sister Louise)

  • George was technically the first Beatle to visit the U.S.....his sister Louise is from downstate Benton, IL and welcomed George here on a visit in September 1963.
  • You too can stay at Louise's house the next time you are in Benton....click below. http://www.harddaysnitebnb.com/index.htm
  • Owned HandMade Films which produced several Monty Python movies.
  • Proud Gardener who took an old mansion and turned Friar Park into a thing of beauty.
  • Employed a staff of 10 and his two older brothers to keep up the 30+ acre garden.
  • His first wife Patty Boyd....went on to marry his best friend Eric Clapton
  • Second wife Olivia....tough Mexican who kept an knife-wielding assailant at bay during a 1999 attack at their home by smacking him repeatedly with a fire-poker!

Dad....Now that you just got your license renewed...they even have a '62 Rambler if your interested..it comes with the "optional" wipers feature!
Or my fav....1939 Lincoln Zephyr and matching 1992 Harley Davidson Sportster.

We used to live on a runway......

Planes under construction at Ashburn Field in 1917. (8217 S. Cicero Ave)

If you look at this map.....we lived at 80th/Kolin which looks like it was right in the middle of a runway at one time....

Overhead view of the Aero Club from the early 20's....Cicero Ave on the far left....79th Street on the top.....83rd Street just above the bottom of the photo.

Other early airports in the Chicago area......
Cicero Flying Field was a huge one at the time.

http://historicaerials.com/
Historic Aerials is now my New Favorite Website.....
It will take you a bit to get used to the tools at the top of the map screen...
and you should also turn "on" the road markings to the left of the map.
You can view an area of land through the decades to view the changes in topography.
This led me to the old neighborhood and unanswered questions about......
--Why there was an airport at 83rd and Cicero...??
--Why there was a large housing subdivision built on the land where Rainey/Hancock Park is now...with no other houses around at all in the early 50's except for these??
Check out 79th/Kostner in the 1951 map version.
Read below....now I am wondering what was REALLY under that sled hill?

Rainey Park

History
The establishment of Ashburn Flying Field at 83rd and Cicero Avenue, a World War I pilot training facility and Chicago's first airport, spurred development in Chicago's Ashburn community. By the late 1920s, area residents needed a park to serve their fledgling community. On October 19, 1929, the South Park Commission agreed to purchase a substantial property in Ashburn. Unfortunately, the stock market crashed just ten days later, and the resulting financial hardships prevented the South Park Commission from improving the site.

In 1934, the city's 22 independent park boards were consolidated into the Chicago Park District, and the newly-formed agency took control of the Ashburn property. Park district designers soon developed a preliminary plan for the site, already called Rainey Park for Edward J. Rainey (1905-1911), an influential South Park Commissioner who advocated neighborhood park creation. Though the initial Rainey Park plans were not executed, the property did serve as a temporary nursery.

In 1942, when the U.S. Defense Department condemned the northern half of the park for a Chrysler Corporation airplane factory, the park district purchased property to the south.

In late 1945, the Chicago Housing Authority leased Rainey Park to provide temporary housing for returning World War II veterans. The lease ended in December, 1956, at which time the park district sold a portion of its land to the Chicago Board of Education for the new Hancock Elementary School.

Improvements finally began at Rainey Park in 1959. Park facilities soon included a baseball diamond, tennis and horseshoe courts, and playground equipment. From the beginning, the park and the adjacent school have been jointly operated by the park district and the Board of Education. Though Hancock School closed for several years in the 1980s, the park district continued to use the building for programs, and the school has since reopened.

The school gymnasium doubles as a fieldhouse for Rainey Park.

Chicago's first airport, Ashburn Flying Field, opened in 1916, spurring Chicago's drive to be an aviation center. During World War I it became a training camp for the Signal Corps, and Ashburn's population rose to 1,363. Afterward it had U.S. Post Office airmail contracts but, being situated on marshy prairie land, quickly lost them due to the field's remoteness and the prohibitive drainage costs.
In 1927 Municipal Airport (now Midway) opened, and further interest in Ashburn diminished. Ashburn Field remained open until 1939.

We've come a long ways in the last 100 years...since the Wright Bros....
Below is some highlights from the 2009 AirVenture Flyin at Oshgosh, WI a few weeks ago...
