Bill Veeck.....as in Wreck.

Bill buys the first Falstaff at the Falstaff 50th Birthday Party in St. Louis at a St. Louis Browns game.

Please forgive my ramblings about this man.....but what started as a Tuesday Trivia photo...turned into a web searching obsession.
"Veeck as in Wreck" is one of about 8 books that I have read in my lifetime. It was named one of the "Top 100 Sports Books of All Time" by Sports Illustrated....and although it has been several years since I have read it....I just reordered it from Amazon to reread and then will give it to Danny so maybe he can have a better understanding as to what baseball was like before...
  • ESPN Baseball Tonight
  • $1,000,000 starting salaries
  • Free Agency
  • Baseball Mascots
  • Skybox Suites
  • Connie's Pizza Races on the Scoreboard
  • $20 Sox Parking
  • T-shirt Cannons
  • Stub-Hub
  • Ad's behind HomePlate
  • Additonal color uniforms for ....whatever?
  • Goalie Catcher Masks
  • Steroids
  • The Wave
  • Stadium Clubs
  • Bud Selig
  • Middle Releivers
  • Closing pitchers
  • Designated hitters
  • Jerry Reinsdorf
Before being the owner of the White Sox.....Bill started as a runner for the Chicago Cubs back when his dad was the President of the club. He grew up in baseball and understood both the game and the promotional angle of it. He was part owner of the Milwaukee Brewers...the Cleveland Indians...the St. Louis Browns (now the Orioles) and the Chicago White Sox twice.
Some tidbits about Bill below....
--Planted the Ivy on the outfield walls of Wrigley as a kid.
--Was the first to put players names on the back of their uniform.
--The exploding scoreboard was his idea.....
--Started Harry Caray singing during the 7th inning stretch
--Signed the first African American player to the AL (Larry Doby)
--Signed the oldest rookie in the AL (Satchel Page - 42)
--Started Fan Appreciation Day
--Started Bat Day
--Approved Disco Demolition.....really his son Mike's promotion.
--Shower in the Center Field stands of old Comiskey for fans...
one of my favorite youth memories.
--Invited all embarrased Sox fans to a game for free....
the night after the Sox were walloped by Toronto Blue Jays in 1979.
--Had his phone number in the Chicago phone book.....
that way if you had a "beef" about the team.....he would welcome your call.
(His wife's number is still in the book)

WW II interrupted Bill's baseball plans after Milwaukee....he spent 3 years as a Marine and lost his foot in action....several surgeries and complications led him to losing part of his leg.

Bill celebrates with his 1948 Cleveland Indians after they won the World Series.
This year the beat the Boston Red Sox in the AL playoffs and beat the Boston Braves for the WS title......MLB attendance record with over 80,000+ attending single games in Cleveland. I guess that there wasn't much to do in Cleveland in 1948.

When it became clear that the 1949 Cleveland Indians would not repeat their successes of 1948.....Bill buried the 1948 AL pennant in Center Field in front of 35,000 fans.

My favorite....(First Photo)

Falstaff's 50th Birthday Celebration....where the fans first drink was on Bill. Bill tried to tie this in with the 50th Anniversary of Baseball.....and even though no one (including Falstaff) actually knew when Falstaff started....it was "decided" that they were now 50!!

Grandstand Manager Day.....allowed fans to vote on changes during the game. Fans could vote on if the pitcher stays in or not....if a player would steal or not.....and others.

3' 7" Eddie Gaedel was hired by Veeck for $100 as a promotion to bring people in to see the St. Louis Browns. He sent Eddie's paperwork to the MLB offices on a Friday and had Eddie play over the weekend before the paperwork was read by MLB on Monday. Browns manager had a copy of the contract in his pocket in case the umpires had any issues.

Eddie was told to crouch down leaving only a couple of inches for a strike zone.....and NOT to swing. Veeck told Eddie that there was a sniper on the roof who would "take him out" if he swung. Eddie was the pinch-hitter for the lead-off batter in the 2nd game of a double header.

After 4 balls.....Eddie walked to first base and was quickly replaced by a pinch-runner. Veeck called Eddie the Greatest Midget ever to play the game of baseball.

  • Bill was hired by P.K. Wrigley to explore expansion options in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

  • Bill's loss of his leg never slowed him down or deterred him.....he even had an ashtray built into his first wooden leg.

  • Bill and his other promotion directors taking part in Opening Day festivities for the 1976 Chicago Opening Day.

Sad Day......end of an era.....Bill hands over the keys to Jerry Reinsdorf.

Thanks for indulging.....
I'm off with Danny to today's Sox game against Minnesota......
to cheer for Joe Crede and the Pepperoni Pizza.
I think more Joliet Jackhammer games will be in store for this year.

I think these guys could take him.

Trivia Tuesday......

WHO AM I??

First correct guess to unobuckeroo@aol.com wins the GRAND PRIZE!!

Hints.....Native of Hinsdale, IL.....His dad worked for the Chicago Cubbies....he too worked for the Cubbies numerous times in his career....he snuck a "live" radio microphone into Harry Caray's booth as a practical joke, during the 7th inning stretch, just as Harry would sing his daily boisterous rendition of "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" ....that "practical joke" is now history.

During this Opening Week of Baseball....I will dedicate this Saturday's blog to "him".
But who is "him"??
GO SOX!

Sniff.....Sniff.......

Meet Patrick Tribett

This Ohio man was nabbed for "abusing harmful intoxicants" as he attempted to make a purchase at Bellaire's Dollar General Store.
The 41-year-old Tribett, it seems, had been huffing spray paint and needed a refill.

My advice for Patrick.......Nail Polish Remover in the future!

JOHN MCNALLY......YOU'RE A BIG WINNER!!!
Your Grand Prize will be in your mailbox soon!

John got it half right.....he guessed the correct location.
Tuesday's photo was of the "Cash Office" at the Marshall Field's store on State Street.
A waterfall of selected pneumatic vacuum tubes connected the cash office with all of the different departments in the store. Therefore saving trips between registers and the safe.

To all you others.....better luck next week.

Happy April Fool's Day!

After trying to come up with a clever hoax to pull on all of you.....
I decided that e-jokes are pretty hard to pull off.
So after all of my research......
I now give you....my TOP 10 April Fool's Jokes.
  1. Screw down your spouse's deodorant stick....and fill the top half with cottage cheese! (Hopefully they are awake enough to understand this joke.....or it will be a long day!)
  2. Buy a bunch of extra Tribunes today, save them for next year and switch out your neighbors copies next year before they get up. (Little planning needed here.....and will only work if the Trib is still operating next year!)
  3. Send email to friends stating you found the "ultimate" search engine.....http://www.zombo.com/ Watch this for a full minute and TRY not to laugh!
  4. Stretch some Handi-Wrap over the toilets and close the lid.....Hilarity will ensue. (Old Woolworth trick from my stockboy days.)
  5. The ol'.....put a rubberband on your kitchen sink sprayer and point at the sink user. (Editors Note: Do this with the water faucet off)
  6. Tape a couple of magnets to the bottom of an empty Starbucks Cup....attach to the roof of your car.....and then drive to work but IGNORE all of the honks and people waving at you!
  7. After your spouse falls asleep......take his/her alarm clock and set the alarm for 3:00am.....but before you do this you need to plug it into a different outlet in the room and hide the alarm clock......preferably in a drawer. For better results....unscrew and hide all lightbulbs in the room so the hunt for the alarm clock....is more challenging!!
  8. Tape down the cradle tab of your phone....when it is picked up....it will still ring! HELLO?
  9. FOR CUB FANS ONLY........Switch the phone number on one of their primary SPEED dial options....rather than calling MOM they now will be calling the White Sox Box Office.
  10. Go to Craiglist and post yourself a garge sale.....not for you of course but for your victim. Make sure that it starts 7:00am and note: "Early-bird SPECIALS FOR SENIORS!"

I will be out of town all week....so please no Garage Sales for Maribeth!!

Weeeee'rrreeeee tttthhhheee Southside Irish.....

Happy "Southside" St. Pat's Day.....

We spent most of Sat at the Kerry Piper in Willowbrook.....and didn't get arrested.
Great little find off of 55 & 83....and only 15 minutes from home.
Plenty of entertainment....but we realized that there are only about 6 good Irish songs and eveything else is really Country/Western or Folk....

Other than "GREEN alligators".....is the UNICORN SONG really Irish!?

Heard....."Southside Irish" and "Whiskey in the Jar" ....more times than I had beer!!
Which by the way.......was too many!

Southside Trivia.....
"We're The Southside Irish" was penned by Terry McEldowney who lived 2 blocks from our old house at the end of Kildare with his Mom....formerly of Little Flower and had some Uncle Jim connections. I was his favorite paperboy back in the day.

Also.....I always thought that any more than one Bagpipin' song was one too many......
but the Emerald Society put on a pretty incredible show.....
I booked them for my funeral.

Check out these original 79th street Southside Irish Parade pics in front of Leo H.S.....

Heading home from Nashville this week.....I stopped and picked up a couple of CD's for the ride home. My favorite was Stevie Wonder's "The Definitive Collection". So when you are out this weekend at WalMart or Target....it is probably the best 10-12 dollars that you can spend....over 20+ Stevie Favorites!

My favorite song off of the album is "Master Blaster"....and it was blasted for most of the ride home. Give it a listen.....

The Schwinn 10 speed that I bought in 1984 has seen better days and I can not seem to find tires for it. Kind of funny that my 1984 Schwinn cost more than the Schwinn that I saw at Target on Sunday.
Must be the difference between U.S. made and the Target "El Schwinno"

Cat in a Target Shirt.....

So.......

I don't think that this was in Erin's Job Description when she started at Target a few years back....but the guy who was supposed to be the "Cat" backed out today and Erin "volunteered" for a few hours keeping the kiddies happy.
(Volunteered=the costume fit her)

I think that if it was up to Erin....she would do this every Sunday in order to avoid the Customer Service counter.

No reports of the "Cat" kicking any kids.....

Photos are.....
Hard to tell the difference between the two Cats?
Notice Molly & Katie behind the Target Cat.....very unimpressed.
