We have a winner.....

Mel Torme and Jerry Lewis are the correct answers to this week's TT.

.
I must report....
that as much as it pains me.....JAMES FARRELL is again this week's GRAND PRIZE winner. Your GRAND PRIZE will be arriving shortly.
.
Although Nancy McNally also had the correct answers....she excluded herself from competition this week.....and commented that she "didn't mind losing to Jimmy Farrell." (This attitude is GREATLY discouraged in the future and differs terribly with the opinion of this Blog's host.)
.
Some of my younger Blog followers have complained recently that "you have to be ancient (like Jim Farrell) to have a freeking chance at winning the Grand Prize!?!?"

Your feelings are understood and I have switched gears for next week's contest to address your needs.

But.....
GOD HELP YOU IF FARRELL WINS AGAIN!!!
.
LET'S GET IT TOGETHER PEOPLE!

Mr. McFeely reminds you that postage goes up today
(Monday 5/11) to .44 cents for a letter.

Initially, there were few or no postal regulations governing packages mailed parcel post.
To construct a bank in Vernal, Utah in 1916, a Salt Lake City Company figured out that the cheapest way to send 40 tons of bricks to the building was by Parcel Post.

Each brick was individually wrapped & mailed.
Postal rules were promptly rewritten.

Double DOH!!

I think that it is fair to say that Homer isn't a Hoosier.....after stopping at 4 Post Offices in the last 2 days...I am without any Simpsons Stamps.

  • P.O. # 1......"What??.....They don't come out until next week on May 7th." (??)
  • P.O. # 2......"Yeah I got 'em....(success I thought)....uhhhh.....they won't scan and nobody teached me how to manually enter digits... so I can't sell 'em to ya."
  • P.O. # 3......."I didn't know that Jessica Simpson had a stamp....damn!"....I told her politely that 'No..... actually I'm looking for the O.J. Simpson stamp'..paused... turned and left.
  • P.O. # 4......Polish guy relieving for lunch breaks....I got out of line after 4 minutes of his broken English.....was afraid I might go O.J. on him.

Thinking about crossing the stateline into Kentucky.....but on the other hand.....DOH!

Who remembers Bobby Brady in the "Towering Inferno" mmmmmmmmmmm??

Tuesday's photo was from Mike's recent photo shoot with the local Police Dept for DUI.

Do you have 2 minutes?

1901/Churchill Downs.

1964/Tunnel from the Grandstands to the Infield.

No matter how many times one goes to the Derby.....when the Churchill Downs Bugler blows out "Call to the Post" for the 1oth race....and 157,000 of your closest friends scream for joy.....the hairs on your neck will stand at attention.....guaranteed....no matter how many Juleps you have had.

All walks of life....millionaires to rail & jail-birds, all converge upon Louisville for these treasured 2 minutes....and then hurry up and wait another year so that they can do it all over again.

I've slept in tents in the snow...in friends vans... ponied up to a weekend at The Galt House (with 14 friends in a double-room).....rode in strangers limos ....walked miles in the rain.....always picked the losers.....and have never had a bad time.

Plenty of great stories that seem to get bigger as another year passes.
If you have never been.....you need to go at least once.

You may not see a horse....but that's not the point.

:)

Kentucky Derby Trivia

  • No other U.S. horse race runs more than 14 horses....Derby has 20.

  • Derby horses tend to lose 15 to 25 pounds during the race.

  • They also go through a new pair of shoes in the race.

  • No matter when a horse is born....they all turn a year older on Jan. 1st.

  • No race horse can have a name that is longer than 18 letters.

  • Only 21 horses have ever led and won the race....wire to wire.

  • Post position 5 and 16 have produced the most Derby winners.

  • Post positions 17 & 19.....NEVER HAVE HAD A WINNER.

(Sorry "Summer Bird" & "Desert Party" fans....although you never know?)

  • Secretariat in 1973 was the only horse to break the 2 minute mark (1:59.4)

  • 1957...Jockey Willie Shoemaker misread the finish line and pulled up short on his leading horse 'Gallant Man' only to be passed and finish 2nd! DOH!!

  • Willie redeemed himself in 1986 on Ferdinand to become the oldest (54) jockey ever to win a Kentucky Derby.

  • Willie's birth weight was 2.5 pounds and not expected to make it through the night.....was placed in a shoe box and put in the oven to keep him warm.

  • 1991...Willie rolled his Ford Bronco while driving drunk....left him a quadriplegic.

  • He sued Ford....and won a $1,000,000 settlement....DOUBLE DOH!!

  • Continued to train horses until his death in 2003.

  • Tim and I met him in the late 90's outside of the track at the corner drug store...in his wheelchair on the Sunday morning after the Derby.

  • Longest shot....Donerail in 1913.....91 to 1 odds.

  • Only 50 "favorites" have won out of the last 134 years. (So....just pick your lucky number...your favorite color....or shoot a dart at the program)

  • If you are picking colors....ONLY 4 Black horses have won.

  • Only U.S. President to attend the Derby .....Richard M. Nixon...1968.

  • Mmmmmmm.....President Richard Nixon would be in attendance the same year (1968) that the ONLY Derby winner (Dancers Image) would be disqualified for cheating!! Coincidence.....I think not.

  • (Actually an interesting story if you have another minute)

  • 97 Derby winners were born in Kentucky.

  • Ladies Only.....only 3 fillies have ever won.

  • 400 horses are nominated each year to run....usually only 20 do...this is based on their winnings over the Winter Race Schedule.

  • Lotsaluck!!

PHOTO FINISH........ HOLD ALL TICKETS!!

Aaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnddddddddddddddddddd........

It's NANCY "Seabiscuit" McNALLY
by a nose over
JIM "Mr. ED" FARRELL!

Both with correct answers......but Nancy was the first to name both Walt Disney & Charlie Chaplin placing their bets at the Santa Anita Racetrack in March/1939. Nancy your Grand Prize will be in the mail shortly!

Get your bets in for tomorrow's KY Derby....and watch tomorrow's Blog for a hot tip!

Other than being famous for his Tramp character.....Chaplin was an accomplished songwriter who penned the music to "Smile" which has been covered by many artists including the list given on Tuesday.

Nat King Cole's version is here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sqLRNVmR44

  • Chaplin co-founded United Artists in 1919.
  • First actor to appear on the cover of TIME Magazine.
  • Sir Charles Chaplin was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1975.
  • Was married 4 times...Met 2nd wife when she was 12.....married at 16.
  • At his peak....he entered a Chaplin-look-a-like contest and lost.
  • Bob Hope won first prize at a similar contest in Cleveland, OH.
  • Rest in peace?? 1 year after his death...Chaplin's coffin was stolen and held for ransom...the culprits were caught and he was re-buried at an undisclosed location. Hopefully deeper.

  • Walt was born in 1901 and grew up at 1249 N Tripp in a house that his Dad built.
  • Disney was an Oscar nominee 59 times and won 22 of those times....on top of 3 special and 1 honorary Oscar.
  • More nominations than any other individual in Oscar History.
  • Contrary to popular belief....Walt's body is not frozen in a cryonics chamber full of liquid nitrogen somewhere awaiting a comeback with "Snow White 2".
  • Never graduated from H.S....dropped out of McKinley HS/Chicago....does have honorary degrees from Yale....Harvard....UCLA.
  • When searching for land for his theme parks.....he went by the name of M.T. Lott (empty lot)...as to avoid price surges.
  • Upon making it big...Walt and brother Roy bought his parents a new home in Los Angeles....unfortunately the house had a faulty HVAC system ....their mother died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

(Yes......I need both of their names...there are no 1/2 Grand Prize awards)

Hints...
A couple of Oscars between them (understatement)....one grew up on Tripp Ave in Chicago....other is a "Sir" not a "mister"....one may be chilly....the other was a composer with #1 hits in several different languages..recorded by Nat King Cole...Judy Garland...Elvis Costello....Michael Jackson.....among others.

Sox WIN!!

  • New "Championship Moments" Monument in front of Sox Park...make sure you check out both sides.....we didn't know there was a back....until we got home.

  • Carlton ignores Danny.

  • Hard to take a pic at Sox Park without an advertisement.

Went to the Sox game on Saturday to watch Joe Crede wear another uniform. Kind of sad especially when he is featured on the new World Series Monument at the entrance of the park.
32* by the 6th inning made it feel more like a Bears game than a Sox game.

My idea.....Sox should charge more for sunny seats in April. ("Sunny Season Tickets")

Konerko still sitting at 299 career HRs....although Quentin got one just as Dan went to the bathroom.....but he said that the fireworks sounded great in there.

Saw Uncle Timmy and a friend from his work after the game.....they were warm in sunny Center Field.

Sox 8....Minnesota 0.

Even with Crede and minus Torii Hunter.....

I still hate Minnesota.

Hoppy Easter!

Happy Easter.......fortunately all of these people are NOT heading to Sue/Peter's today.

Here's a view of some of the one and one half million New Yorkers who showed off their Easter finery in the traditional Easter Parade on Fifth Avenue. 1/6th of New York's population took advantage of the sunny skies and fair weather to make their way, inch-by-inch, in a one-mile stretch of New York's famed Avenue.
St. Patrick's Cathedral is at right.

April 1st....1956.

Obviously.....not a lot of other entertainment options in April/'56 New York.
