We Have a Weiner!!!

Music Stars Batting for Charity
Rock music star Alice Cooper (left) cringes as he stands a little close to country singer John Denver as he swings the bat during the Kenny Rogers charity softball game in Las Vegas, Nevada. The celebrity team defeated members of the local news media, 20-19. The game, attended by nearly 4,000 at the University of Nevada baseball stadium, was a benefit for the Nevada Special Olympics.
DATE PHOTOGRAPHED May 30, 1977

Even Mr. James Farrell couldn't believe his own guess this week.....but YES.... he is the ONLY correct guess this week!!
Your Grand Prize will be on it's way shortly.

"Mr. Man without sunglasses".......
is none other than Vincent Damon Furnier.....aka ALICE COOPER!!!

  • Cruising through the great state of Michigan....you can catch his radio show.
  • Not only was "No More Mr. Nice Guy" ...a great hit....
it was also a great HINT last Tues.
  • Donated thousands of dollars back in the 80's to restore the "HOLLYWOOD" sign in LA...dedicated one of the letter "O" 's to his good friend GrouchO Marx.
  • Kicked his DAILY 2 cases of Bud and a bottle of Whiskey diet....
and took up golf!! Considered by many to be of Pro-ranking.
  • In Michigan....he is the Ditka of local commercials......very humerous.

  • Interesting clip with Alice on The Muppet Show.....proving my "weed theory" from an earlier post!

"Mr. Shades with the bat".........
is none other that Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr.......or aka JOHN DENVER!!

  • (Sorry all of you George Michael guessers out there.....George would have only been 14 at the time of this photo.....try again next week!!)
  • Also a big drinker who should have taken up golf....but instead he took up flying.
  • FIRST BIG HIT......"Leaving on a Jet Plane" made famous by Peter, Paul & Mary

LAST BIG HIT.....on a beach outside of Pacific Grove, CA.

Sweepin the clouds away......

OK....
so it wasn't always a Sunny Day on Sesame Street...
Remember David from the early days of S.S.??
Yeah you do...he was the guy who took over Mr. Hooper's Grocery Store
after Mr. Hooper died.,,,,he also voiced several early Muppet characters.

Well....here's what happened to David....aka actor Northern Calloway.

In his early thirties, Calloway slowly began to exhibit signs of bipolar disorder which led to a nervous breakdown on the morning of September 19, 1980 in Nashville, TN.
He beat his hostess with an iron rod, giving her serious head and rib injuries.
He then fled into the suburbs of Nashville. Along the way, he smashed a plate-glass window and storm door at one house and did extensive damage to the interior of another, destroying the family's collection of fine crystal, smashing a television set and breaking light bulbs with his bare hands. He also stole a backpack from a first grader and smashed a windshield with a rock.

He was arrested after hiding out in a couple's garage, screaming "Help! I'm David from Sesame Street and they're trying to kill me!" Despite this incident, Calloway continued to work on Sesame Street. Calloway's final years on the show were marked by periods of declining health and ability punctuated by episodes of erratic behavior; during these years, Calloway reportedly bit music coordinator Danny Epstein during an on-set fight, and he once appeared unannounced at actress Alison Bartlett's high school and proposed to her.

Calloway left the show in 1989, and died in January 1990. The circumstances surrounding Calloway's death remain unclear. Some sources report that he died of stomach cancer, although his family never officially announced the cause of death. 'Unfortunately, Calloway's family rushed him to the closest hospital that happened to be a psychiatric hospital, which created rumors that Calloway had died in an asylum'. He was then taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital in North Tarrytown, where he was pronounced dead at the age of 41. In his authorized history Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street, author Michael Davis claims that Calloway had been a patient at the Stony Lodge psychiatric facility in Ossining, NY at the end of his life, and had died after going into cardiac arrest during a violent altercation with a staff physician. A coroner's report listed Calloway's official cause of death as exhaustive psychosis, now more commonly referred to as excited delirium syndrome (EDS). He was survived by his wife and their only child.

Unlike Will Lee, who had played Mr. Hooper, no mention of his death was made on Sesame Street as at the time of the character's leaving, Calloway was still alive.
He was buried in Ferncliff Cemetery.

Mr. Jim Henson....
creator of the Muppets died at age 53 of pneumonia. A work-a-holic who never wanted to bother people.....were traits that unfortunately led to his demise.

Joe Raposo....

I know ....you're saying WHO?

He was the resident composer at Sesame Street and The Electric Company...
and wrote the following hits....
"Sesame Street Theme Song"
(with Toots Thielemans on harmonica)
"C is for Cookie"
"Not Easy 'Bein Green"
"Has Anybody Seen My Dog?"
"Somebody Come and Play"
"Would You Like to Buy an 'O'?"

As well as "bouncy instrumentals"......

Died at age 51 of cancer.....
was close friends with Frank Sinatra and Leo Durocher.

Even sadder........

He also penned....
the theme from "Three's Company"
the theme from "The Ropers"
"Sing.....Sing a Song" by the Carpenters.

Maybe not seeing 52 was a good thing.

Happy Birthday......Cha....Cha....Cha.

Big Bird and friends are 40 years old this week.....
and although I was on the older end of the Sesame Street demographics
('7' and pre-Snufalufagus) I do remember my Mom having Sue, John and I sit down in the back bedroom of the Kilbourn house to watch the first episodes.

I was sooooooo much more mature than that "kids show"....
and into The Banana Splits and The Monkees by then.....
but I do have some of my favorites Sesame Street clips below.

Pretty cool for a kids show.....

We have a Weiner!!!

Bouncing back from an embarrassing loss last week.....
Molly Flynn rings in first in front of many to score this week's GRAND PRIZE!!
It will arrive shortly!!

Mr. "Thinker in the Hat"......
is Mr. Carl Reiner....who was instrumental in the early days of television sit-coms with "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and was on "Your Show of Shows". Directed "Oh GOD!" with George Burns and also directed most of the early Steve Martin movies in the 80's.
His son is Rob Reiner who played "Meathead" on "All in the Family".

"Mr. "Where's Waldo with the bling"......
is none other than Robert Culp who co-starred with Bill Cosby in the 60's TV hit "I-Spy" along with several "Columbos" and other TV dramas of the 70's. Came back in the 80's to guest star in "The Greatest American Hero" which lasted for 3 years. Other appearances include....The Cosby Show/Golden Girls/Everybody Loves Raymond.

Mr. "WTWWA?"......
Mmmmmmmm.....what can I say.....
Mr. Jesse lasted only 1 year at the University of Illinois in 1960....and then transferred to North Carolina Ag/Tech. He claimed that it was due to U of I's racial bias which included him being unable to play Quarterback ...even though he was a star QB in High School.

This claim may have been exaggerated due to the fact that the starting QB for Illinois that year was African/American.

Jesse left at the end of his second semester after being put on academic probation.....
can I get an Amen?

Song of the week.....

Original video "one-take" of "A Boy Named Sue"....
which is actually a poem by Chicagoan, Shel Silverstein.

Johnny only read it over once or so before trying it out in front of the inmates at San Quentin Prison in Califronia, 1969.
This "one-take" ended up being Johnny's biggest selling hit....
spending 3 weeks at #2 in 1969.

Silverstein also penned several cool/bizarre Childrens Books as well as other songs.

We have a Weiner.....

Molly Flynn rings in with the first of many correct answers and takes home this week's GRAND PRIZE. It will be arriving on your doorstep shortly.

Mr. Michael Joseph McNally (no relation) was the correct answer...all 150lbs. of him.

Michael Joseph McNally [Minooka Mike] (September 13, 1893 - May 29, 1965) was a reserve infielder in Major League Baseball who played for three different teams between 1915 and 1925. Listed at 5' 11", 150 lb., McNally batted and threw right-handed. He was born in Minooka, Pennsylvania.

A clever reserve infielder and basically a line drive hitter, Mc Nally entered the majors in 1915 with the Boston Red Sox, playing for them five years before joining the New York Yankees (1921-1924) and Washington Senators (1925). His most productive season came with the 1920 Red Sox, when he posted career-highs in games (93), runs (42), hits (80), stolen bases (13) and on-base percentage (.326), while hitting a .256 average.

In a 10-season career, McNally was a .238 hitter (257-for-1078) with 169 runs and 85 RBI in 492 games, including 16 doubles, six triples, one home run and 40 stolen bases. As an infielder, he made 415 appearances at second base (181), third base (167), shortstop (60) and first base (7), while posting a collective .951 fielding percentage.

McNally also played on five American League pennant winners, appearing in the World Series with Boston in 1916 and for New York in 1921 and 1922, though he did not play in the 1915 and 1923 Series. In nine appearances, he hit .200 (4-for-20) with one RBI, two stolen base, four runs, and stole home plate in Game One of 1921 Series.

Following his playing retirement, McNally managed in the minor leagues from 1927 to 1938 for the Binghamton Triplets (1927-29), Wilkes-Barre Barons (1930-32, 1937-38) and Williamsport Grays (1933-36). He posted a 872-781 record for a .528 winning percentage, including four first places and the 1934 New York-Penn League championship title with the Williamsport Grays. After that, he worked during almost two decades for the Cleveland Indians as a scout and farm club director.

McNally died in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania at age 72.

"Dance Club"...OK.. so it's not Studio 54 or Cagney's...but it's been around for over 200 years.

We have a Weiner.....

OK.....
So what part of Jerry "VaLEEintino" Lewis doesn't belong!?!?
--And....when I give you clues like "Mr. Light Loafers"/Milwaukee/CSO.....
you need to take that and run to GOOGLE immediately!!
--And....if you are still using a Radio Shack Tandy 1000 computer and are unable to get Google....then you need to run to Best Buy immediately!!
--And...Mr. Farrell....you were semi-correct with the Jimmy Durante and "Lee Liberace" entry...but my research showed that only his closest friends called him Lee....with his real first name being Wladziu.....
the TT judges would have even taken Walter....
so unless you have more "details" about your 'Lee' entry...
the ruling will stay as follows:

This week TT NEWBIE Molly Flynn steals the Grand Prize with the first correct email with the first and last names of both.....

Jimmy Durante....and Wladziu Valentino Liberace.

Your GRAND PRIZE adorned with a lovely Simpson's Stamp will be on your doorstep shortly....you will need to share with Judy or I will tell!!

Plenty of entries from Danny Kaye...to Jerry Lee Lewis to Mickey Rooney!?!?
(For the love of God people....do you realllllllllly think that Mickey Rooney made more money than Elvis or The Beatles?
If I could suspend you for a week....I would)

Jimmy Durante.....appears annually in Frosty The Snowman!

Jimmy and a young Frank Sinatra.....

--On August 4, 1955, The Jimmy Durante Show was the venue of the last performance by the famous Brazilian singer Carmen Miranda. Miranda fell to her knees while dancing with Durante, who instinctively told the band to "stop da music!". He helped Miranda up to her feet as she laughed "I'm all out of breath!". "Dat's OK, honey, I'll take yer lines" Durante replied. Miranda laughed again and quickly pulled herself together, finishing the show. However, the next morning, August 5, Carmen died at home from heart failure.

I remember thinking as a youngster that Liberace was this cartoon act for old folks in Vegas....but vividly remember seeing him doing the following Boogie Woogie on the old Mike Douglas show....and on Carol Burnett a few weeks later. Probably one of the greatest ever. Also remember him being VERY funny and a smart ass on Carol Burnett.

Amusing piece from the 40's.....

  • Liberace died at age 67 in 1987 in Palm Springs, CA
  • Liberace movie to start filming next year starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon....to be directed by Steven Soderbergh......really!

The Games from Ipanema......

Maybe if our Streets & Sanitation workers could dance (and "work") like
Rio's Streets & Sans workers.....
we might have won it.
