We Have a Wiener!!!!

So after much debate among the TT contest review board...
Mz. Molly Flynn is this week's GRAND PRIZE WINNER with the correct answer...
Mr. Sanford Koufax....
(sorry all you "Sandy" guessers....but rules are rules!)

He was actually born Sanford Braun...
but changed his last name (after his parent's divorced) to his step-father's last name.....
sorry....but the judges gave Molly the green light!

This is one of those historic baseball names that I just never put a face to until this week.
Even though Mantle, DiMaggio, Mays, and others were before my time.....
I could always pick them out of a crowd.....but not Koufax.
  • Retired (when I was 4 years old) at age 30 due to chronic arthritis in his pitching arm.
  • Attended the University of Cincinnati on a basketball scholarship.
  • Has thrown 4 no-hitters (4 consecutive years) including one PERFECT GAME....only 20 pitchers have.
  • Appeared (with fellow player Don Drysdale) in the 1966 film "Warning Shot"
  • Had shirts tailored to have one sleeve long and one short to wear under his suits....this took the pressure off of his arthritic arm.
  • 1965....
made it to the World Series.....
was scheduled to pitch GAME 1.....
and took the day off due to that day falling on Yom Kippur....
did I mention Sanford is Jewish?

Give me a few minutes and listen to the last 3 outs of Koufax's perfect game....
called by Vince Scully......classic!!

Did I mention that he did this against the Cubbies!?!?!
...although to the Cubs' credit..they too had a no-hitter through the 7th.
