Waaa...waaa.....waaa...........

So maybe I'm the only one who collects
famous retailer trading cards.....
BUT IT MADE ME A BIG WINNER THIS WEEK!!!!

Aaron Montgomery Ward was the answer for this week.
--He published the first general merchandise mail order catalog in 1872
--His offices were originally on North Clark St.

Probably a Starbucks now....
which ironically,
I was in my first Starbucks on Saturday.
Not a fan at all of coffee or tea.....
but the girls ordered some "Shittachino"...
and it tasted like a shake to me.
Maybe that was French for "shake"?
I am now a fan......I know....
welcome to the new millennium.

--Richard Sears copied Ward's catalog and came out with his copy in 1896

File:Art Institute 1893.gif

--Big fan of expanding and preserving Lake Park which was renamed Grant Park in 1901
also a fan of stopping future construction in the park.
--Ward was known as the "Watch Dog of the Lakefront".....
led the landfill expansion also.
Lake Michigan originally was positioned just to the east of the train lines that ran behind the Art Institute.
--The expanded Grant Park was built on a lot of the construction debris left from the Chicago Fire of 1871.
--His head, among other retailers, line the Retailer Hall of Fame outside of the Merch Mart.

Ward built his tower before Sears did.....
it was on the corner of Madison/Michigan.
It's still there but they cut off the tower and made it condos.....read below.

FDR was not a frequent shopper......

He's currently chilling on North Ravenswood Ave.
in the Rosehill Cemetery....
which is a another subject....
for another week.

Landmarks.....

OK....
so here's my nickel Chicago Architectural tour...
all courtesy of my Comfort Suites 26th floor vantage point.

Cool figure chiseled into the 333 N. Michigan Ave building.....
there is one on the north and south side of this building
about 40 stories above Michigan Ave.
Built in 1928
Chicago landmark
Owned by the Wirtz family.....(yes that Wirtz family)
They are sinking $25 million dollars into renovation.
http://www.chicagorealestatedaily.com/article/20120926/CRED03/120929850/wirtz-family-to-renovate-michigan-avenue-tower

Another cool gem out my western windows......
(no pun intended)
the 35 East Wacker Dr. building.
Also known as the Jewelers Building.
Unbelievable detail all too many floors up to notice...
Built in 1927
Chicago Landmark.
Initially had the first 23 floors to parking.
Had a car elevator to lift a jewelry salesman's car from the street level
all the way up through the center of the building directly into
an upstairs office for security reasons.
Once considered the tallest building in the World outside of NY.
Top part of dome was originally a restaurant and now is the
showplace of architect Helmut Jahn.
Helmut designed the Thompson Center and the
United Terminal 1 at O'Hare Airport.

Not a Chicago landmark.....but I love what Donald has done to the place.

My Kinda Town.....

Sooooooo.......
While Maribeth was out in Vegas this weekend "investing" our nest egg.......
I decided to take Molly/Katie and go explore Chicago for the weekend.

I will be delighting you with all of my new Chicago facts and finds for the rest of this week.

Find #1.....The Comfort Suites at 320 N. Michigan Ave.
http://www.comfortsuiteschicago.com/

They recently rehabbed an old office building and turned it into a hotel.
Right in the middle of the Loop just south of the river.

Used my points and due to the fact that I use Comfort hotels when
I travel to other great cosmopolitan cities such as Akron and Ft. Wayne.....
they upgraded me to the "Presidential Suite".

Now most of the time when I get upgrades with Comfort....
it usually means extra towels, hot water and a remote that works.

Not here in Chicago.....
top Penthouse....26th floor with 2 beds/2bathrooms/dining room/kitchen/loft and outdoor patio.
I felt like Snoop Dogg on 4/20.

Pic above is from the patio in panoramic mode.....

More tips to follow......

We Have a Weiner!!!

Well it hurts me to announce that we have a winner this week.....
But it hurts so good.

Mary Pollard was the first among thousands in this week with none other than....
Mr. John (Cougar) Mellencamp pictures here with his Joker GF.....Meg Ryan.

No real middle name....
other than I found a " J" as a middle initial but no significance to it.

--He calls Seymour, Indiana home.
--Rejected the Brad Pitt role in "Thelma and Louise"
--Wrote several of his songs with co-writer and boyhood friend George Green who recently passed away at age 59 due to a rapid forming small cell lung cancer.
........mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm wonder how he caught that??
--Grandfather at 36.....which I think is mandatory in Indiana.

9,999,999 tears to go.....

Another "stuck in my head tune".....
Talented married couple that are way too underrated.

Bruce wrote for the likes of Tim/Faith...
George Strait and the Dixie Chicks.
(Travelin' Soldier)
His songwriting brother was married to
one of the "Chicks".

This is an old Dickie Lee song.....
Dickie's video looks like a bad karaoke night at Roccos' Pub.

Waa...Waa.....Waa......

All I can say is that.....
you're all a bunch of losers
and don't know your Adlai's (I, II or III's)
from a hole in the ground.

--Mr. Roger Joseph Ebert was the
"Cub Reporter" in Tues pic.....
(not Chris O'Connor or John Tesh!!)

SenatorKefauver(D-TN).jpg

--Carey Estes Kefauver was the
"Man on the hot seat"

--U.S. Senator from Tennessee

--Was Adlai Stevenson II's VP running mate in 1956.
--Lost to Eisenhower and Nixon.
--Enacted laws to break up exorbitant profits rung up by
Drug Companies back in the early '60s.
Forced these companies to provide accurate information about new drugs and stopped cheap generic drugs being marketed as "break through" medication using a new trade name.
--Worked hard and partied harder.
Notorious drinker and smoker....
Feeling ill.... still went to work and
suffered a heart attack on the Senate floor......
died two days later at age 60.
Should have taken a couple of generic aspirin.

But don't you feel bad.....
even though you are a loser....
you now have something for your dinner party this weekend.
